When the socket, relays, and contactors are fully charged, they will heat up. Heating can affect component life, thus this must be factored into the industrial design. The socket is particularly fragile since it is exposed to the weather and wear during mating cycles.

Environmental concerns — broad working temperature range Will your EVSE be able to withstand severe temperatures? Standard commercial temperature range components are rated for 0 to 70 degrees Celsius, while industrial temperature range components are rated for -40 to +85 degrees Celsius. Include this as early as feasible in your planning.

"As part of our research, we attended the Smart India Expo, a pivotal event offering insights into EV charging stations and the EV landscape. Among this year's largest technological expos, it showcased companies pioneering global innovation. Organized by 'Transport India,' the EV Expo aimed to unite enthusiasts, fostering knowledge exchange and advancing the Clean Mobility Mission 2030.

Engaging with government officials, industry leaders, and 'Make in India' startup representatives, we explored groundbreaking designs for EV stations. These startups aimed to seamlessly integrate the current infrastructure with EV systems, reflecting evolving market trends and designs. Some of these companies began their journey in 2001, predating the surge in EV demand in the country."

Problems & gaps

1. Heavy charging plugs and cables

"Observations at charging stations revealed critical market insights. The DC chargers' hefty 7.5 Kg cable and plug pose usability challenges, especially for users with arthritis or thyroid issues. The exposed excess cables lack safety measures, raising concerns for user safety and space utilization. Addressing this need for an ergonomic, safe, and universal solution is crucial. Moreover, the exposure to India's weather conditions threatens the durability of these cables, presenting a significant concern."

2. Time engagement with space.

According to the primary research interviews and research, it was found that there is no user engagement with the existing EV infrastructure. The users find it difficult to fulfill basic needs like seating, shade etc and find themselves helpless. According to some users they like to stay next to the electric vehicle while it’s being charged. They need something to be engaged with, while their electric vehicles are getting charged. A lot of users feel bored as they enter the charging station

Impact on grid due to increase in EV charging

"'Sustainability' holds diverse meanings for individuals today, particularly concerning EVs' role in reducing fossil fuel consumption for a more sustainable world. The challenge lies in ensuring grid capacity for the rising number of EVs. Moreover, the increase in thermal power plants challenges the sustainability concept. Integrating clean energy sources, particularly solar, with the EV sector offers a promising solution for achieving sustainable and clean mobility."

Re-designing Charger plugs

Re-designing Charger plugs

The observations made at charging stations provided invaluable real-world insights into the market. Notably, the DC chargers' charging plugs and cables collectively weighed approximately 7.5 kg, with excess cables left exposed without safety measures. This setup poses challenges for users with arthritis or thyroid issues due to the heavy usability of the product.

A crucial need emerges for redesigning the ergonomics of charging connectors. Presenting a concept and form explorations rooted in understanding user accessibility, this redesign aims to address a prevalent issue in the market's plug variations. The proposed design prioritizes ergonomics, ensuring safety and user-friendly qualities for improved usability.
